ABOUT

My work explores the relationship between critical theory and multimedia experiences. With influences as diverse as Wittgenstein and L. Ron Hubbard, new tensions are manufactured from both opaque and transparent textures.

What starts out as vision soon becomes manipulated into a carnival of lust, leaving only a sense of dread and the chance of a new beginning. As shimmering derivatives become distorted through emergent and academic practice, the viewer is left with an insight into the edges of our era.

Now, that was written by a bot.

What I really like to do is stuff with things.

I’ve been presenting my work regularly since 2005, through exhibitions, lectures, and publications. Latest exhibitions include ARTeFACTo Macao (CN); After Shot, Taipei Photo Festival (TW); SITUATIONS / The Right to Look, Fotomuseum Winterthur (CH); Selections from the Seagrave Museum, DAAP Gallery (USA); Palimpsesto, Penafiel Museum (PT); Timelessness at Ars Electronica Campus (co-curated with Professor Mónica Mendes); Athens Photo Festival, GR; and FORMAT Festival, UK.
Co-coordinated the Post-Screen: International Festival of Art, New Media and Cybercultures (2014 and 2016, FBAUL, ULHT, Fundação Millenium bcp, Lisbon, PT).

My project-oriented practice integrates an investigative approach and subject-based research, using both optical and non-optical technologies. From analogue to digital mediums, I use vernacular archives, old maps, paper-based documents, as well as various resources, such as polystyrene, ferrofluid, bugs, plants, or bioplastics. I‘m keen on exploring different mediums, using interdisciplinary research practice as a creative method.

In 2020, I pursued an AIR at In-situ and V54 in Hong Kong, with a grant by Fundação Oriente. In 2022, I was awarded the Halaqat Media Arts residency, organised by Bozar – Centre for Fine Arts Brussels, Goethe-Institut, and IMAL in Brussels, Belgium (2022) and later in Cairo, organised by Goethe-Institut Kairo and Cairotronica (2023).

Coming from a photochemical photography background, my focus the past few years has been on creating, advocating, and making use of sustainable practices. Currently, as a lecturer at ESAD.cr, Caldas da Rainha (IPL, PT), designed a curricular unit on alternative photographic processes focusing precisely on environmentally conscious practices for the studio/darkroom.
